Top 5 Jazz Festivals Across Europe

Jazz or as it is known by many “America’s Classical Music” is one of the world’s underrated music genres.  Despite that it still has a cross generational appeal.  Whether you’re looking to try something new or you’re a hardcore jazz fan, here are the top 5 Jazz festivals across Europe.

Jazz a Vienne, Vienne France

Based in the picturesque town of Vienne in France, this is a must see event for any Jazz fan.  Since 1981 the annual festival has hosted some of the biggest names in Jazz in a beautiful 7000 seat amphitheater, keeping with the contemporary feel of Jazz.  Here is a look at last year’s show.

A Love Supreme, Sussex

Don’t let the British weather put you off, if anything it adds to the atmosphere!  This relatively new festival that began in 2013 is fast becoming one of the most popular in the Jazz calendar and was previously been nominated for the UK Festival Award for the Best New Festival.  If that’s not enough the festival itself is named after jazz legend Johne Coltrane’s album “A Love Supreme”.

North Sea Jazz Festival, Rotterdam

Forget Amsterdam, Rotterdam is the place to be in Holland this summer!  Despite having a yearly attendance of 60,000 people, this festival keeps with the intimate roots of Jazz by making full use of the Ahoy complex.  In what’s known as the world’s best indoor jazz festival there regularly over 13 stages in use and 1,200 artists performing each year, so there really is something for everyone.

Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, Cork City

This is somewhat off peak festival that’s held in October rather than the summer months, perfect for those post summer blues.  Since 1978 the festival has been attended by over 1 million jazz fans from around the globe and like with many jazz festivals, a wide variety of artists perform.  In some years over the course of the 5 day evey, fans have seen almost 1,000 artists perform using over 60 venues across the city.  The venues can include bars, restaurants and the occasional street corner.  As if that wasn’t enough the festival is sponsored by Guinness, so cheers to that.

Jazz in Marciac, Marciac

Perhaps one of the longest festivals in the musical calendar, Jazz in Marciac has exceeded all expectation.  The community with a population of just 1,200 often attracts over 100,000 visitors over the course of the festival.  Making use of the whole village, there is a real community feel to this event.  With a capacity of over 6,000 the main event takes place in a marquee on the town’s rugby pitch.

If there’s a better way to spend your summer vacation than listening to great music, all while learning about a new culture in a historic community then we haven’t found it.
